What are my Options?
While you’re a resident, fellow or intern at the University of Minnesota, you have group long-term disability coverage through The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America (Guardian). Medical School residents and fellows also have short-term disability coverage.
Individual Coverage: Guaranteed
In addition, you have the opportunity to convert the group LTD coverage to an individual disability income policy through a University-sponsored plan. The offer is issued on a Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) basis. The GSI offer is a one-of-a-kind opportunity- you won’t find it at another university in the nation.

You may apply for the GSI anytime during your residency, fellowship, or internship, and up to 60 days after completing your program.
1 30% discount consists of a 10% mental and/or substance-related disorders limitation, a 10% Student/Resident Discount (one must apply within 60 days of completing your program to receive) and a Preferred Occupation Discount.
